What was enforced is cut. What remains is distance.

A listening lens. Original is the untouched master. A chosen region is lifted in parallel, and the level makes room for it.

The Interval

The threshold
is a frequency.
The split is
a moment.

THE INTERVAL is a single twelve minute movement in three parts. One enters through a door. Inside, what was one is cut into two. In the end, what stands apart meets on the same plane. Three parts, never three things: a one, the cut that ends it, and the two that remain. The work does not describe these three states; it builds them from the physical properties of sound. The threshold is a frequency, the split is a moment, the equalising is a direction.

Egemen Billur treats consciousness not as a fixed centre but as a relation rebuilt in sound at every moment. The real material here is therefore not melody but distance: between left and right, low and high, sound and silence. Across three parts these distances open, stretch and come close to closing. They never quite close.

The tonal centre rises from G to A, then falls to F sharp: the work ends a semitone below where it began. Between the second and third parts there are four seconds of silence. In its plainest form, that silence is the title.

DrawingsThe drawings on this page are not ornament. Each is plotted from a measurement of the audio file of its part. The rings on the cover are the level of the three parts, outer to inner.

Vertical lineThe seam running through the cover and through this page is the same line. On the cover it passes through the rings; here, it is the one that opens.

Black and whiteThere is only black and white in this artwork. No grey has been used. Two ends, and the distance between them.
